University of Tartu (Estonia)

General information: Tartu, with nearly 100,000 inhabitants:in, represents the second largest city in Estonia after the capital Tallinn, where historical charm is combined with a distinctive student culture . The city has been awarded the title of "European Capital of Culture" for the year 2024. Many of the sights can be easily reached on foot, in about 40 minutes you can cross Tartu once completely on foot. Through the city flows the Emajõgi (translated: "Mother River"), the longest river in Estonia. Founded in 1632 under King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, the University of Tartu is the oldest university in Estonia and it is the only Baltic university among 1% of the world's best universities. Approximately 16,000 students are enrolled at the university. Each semester, the Tartu Student Days festival takes place. In addition to this, the organisation Erasmus Student Network Tartu (ESN Tartu) has been active for years. There is also the Tartu Welcome Centre where students will be helped to settle in by offering free consultations, registry services and other useful information. 

Study programs and specializations: The bachelor's program in psychology offers a broad overview of various fields of psychology; from intercultural psychology to psychopharmacology to counseling psychology, there are many different offerings. There is a 12 LP psychology elective; the remainder of the curriculum is not elective and predominantly covers many different areas rather than seeking to specialize in a few selected areas.

Study schedule: The spring semester usually begins in early February and ends in late June. This is followed by the summer vacation, which usually lasts until the end of August/beginning of September. Then the fall semester begins, which ends at the end of January.

Other Information: At the beginning of the semester there are orientation events for foreign students. There is also a buddy program to support and accompany international students during their start at the university and in Tartu.
